VOLUME VII THE CLARION, CANTON, SOUTH DAKOTA, APRIL 27, 1956 NUMBER EIGHT CANTON CHAMB R VISITS CAMPUS "Family Porirail" To Show Twice Anna Marie Knutson has been chosen for the leading part of Mary, the mother of Jesus in the all school play, "Family Por-trait," to be presented at 8:15 p.m. in the Academy gym on April 27 and May 1. The three act play written by Lenore Coffee and William Joyce Cowen composes the last three years of Christ's life. It begins in Nazareth, where His remaining brothers under-stand only that in the height of the building season, He has left them and depleted the working force. It continues in Caper-naena, where tavern keepers and promoters have capitaliz-ed on His growing power and popularity. It returns to Naza-reth and the disillusioning exper-iences among His neighbors, then swiftly it journeys to Jer-sualem where the fickle crowd has turned from its cries of "Ho-sannah" to shouts of Hatred and to the upper chamber where after the Last Supper Mary a-waits His return from Gethse-mane. The final secene is laid again in Nazareth several years after the crucifiction where His family still labors under the sel- Runners Prepare For First Meet The Augustana Academy track team is in training for its first meet of the season which will be held at Mitchell on April 30th. The meet is the annual Inter-state Academy Track Meet. Two more are scheduled for May. They are the State Pro-testant Meet at Mitchell on May 5th and the Siouxland Confer-ence meet at Augustana College in Sioux Falls on May 15th. Coach Boyum, during an in-terview, stated that he had not been working with the squad long enough to make any pre-dictions. fish and blind illusion that they have been disgraced. There will be thirty to forty students involved in producing and staging the play, under the direction of Miss Ronsberg. The main characters will be Dave Horton, Joseph; Sylvan Knutson, Juda; Paul Bunn, Si-mon; and Paul H. Nelson, as James. Other characters in the cast will by Joey Johnson, Dav-id Dahl, Lois Rud, Grace Fol-ger, Sharon Bergstrom, Crystal Denny, Olin Odland, Jim Nelson, Virginia Peasha, Harold Fagen, Carol Berge, Luther, Abraham-son, Sherrill Dunbar, Carter Twedt, Tommy Johnson, Bernice Ellefson, Paul Larson, Lee Lar-son, Gary Moe, Jim Thompson, and David Twin. Student directors are Mary Carter and Eileen Eidem. Cos-tume chairman is. Marilyn Kle-in; Make-up chairman, Mary Sikkink; and stage manager, Lyle Loken. Waldorf Choir Sings in Academy Chapel Under the direction of Odvin Hagen, the Waldorf College Choir, from Forest City, Iowa sang at the Academy chapel on April 13. Robert Saugstad, a graduate of '55 and a former member of the Augustana Academy Choir, now sings with this group. s Members of the Canton Cham-ber of Commerce visited the campus on Thursday, April 12th to hold their monthly supper meeting. Members of the Aca-demy faculty and of the Board of Directors were also in atten-dance at the meeting which be-gan at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Vandel Johnson, president of the Cham-ber, presided. The meeting was arranged by the Industrial Committee of the Chamber of Commerce as the outgrowth of a committee meet-ing at which President A. L. Abrahamson spoke on the Aca-demy as an asset to the city of Canton. He enlarged upon this topic when he spoke to the whole Chamber. Copies of Academy promo-tional material (which always bear the name of the city, thus also promoting Canton) were handed out to the men. Also placed in their hands were cop-ies of a mimeographed booklet entitled "What Does Augustana Academy Contribute To Can-' ton?". Following the outline of this booklet, President Abra-hamson spoke on the Academy's hisotrical, promotional and eco-nomic contributions to the city of Canton. Featured as entertainment at the meeting were a partial show-ing of the Home Economics Sty-le Show and pantomine by Way-ne Martin.
