III~' il, ~Illi,l , IIIIIII~~ulllu;'løllhllllllllllil Augustana Academy BULLETIN Clarion Issue Canton, South Dakota, 57013 May 26, 1967 Vol. 44, No. 3 50 Graduate; Nervig A two-fold purpose was served at Augustana Academy commencement exercises on May 21 at the Canton Armory as 50 seniors were graduated and Pastor Robert Nervig was - installed as president of the Academy. The Baccalaureate sermon was delivered in the morning by the Rev. Oliver L. Jones, pastor at Gold Hill Lutheran Church in Butte, Montana. His sermon theme was "Keeping God Alive." His daughter, Jimalee, was a member of the graduating class. The ser-vices were held at Canton Lu-theran Church. The graduation speaker was Dr. L. M. Stavig, former presi-dent of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Dr. nstalled Stavig retired as head of that institution after 22 years of ser-vice. Dr. E. O. Gilbertson, South Dakota district president, installed Pastor Nervig. Pas-tor Nervig responded to the installation. Senior Class President, Andy Hall, brought the message on behalf of the senior class. For probably the first time at an Augie graduation the fac-ulty of the Academy and fac-ulty members from Augustana College joined the graduates by taking part in their caps and gowns in the processional. A reception was held for the parents and friends of the gra-duates at Canton Lutheran Church after the services. Rev. H. Norem To Return to AA The Rev. Harlan Norem, Director of Senior High Edu-cation for the Division of Par-ish Education, the ALC, will be on a one year's leave of absence to serve at the Acade-my. He will arrive on August 1 Pastor Norem will be Direc-tor of Education in the•areas of curriculum planning and ex-perimentation. He will super-vise the Theology courses, stu-dent worship life and be in-volved in the Academy study plan. He will counsel stu-dents and be in charge of sex education. Pastor Norem is a graduate of Augustana College and Luth-er Theological Seminary. He served as a parish pastor in Duluth and from 1955-1959 as campus pastor and teacher of Theology at Augustana Acade-my. Rev. Harlan Norem G orni!zka, Carlson Will Speak at AA Day Augustana Academy Day on August 0 will feature the - Rev. Arne Carlson of Park River, North Dakota, as the 10:30 a. m. speaker and Dr. Reubin Gornitzka, Palm Desert, Cali-fornia, as the afternoon rally speaker at 2:30 p. m. The 25th and the 50th anni-versary classes are to be hon-ored at a banquet to be held in the Canton Armory on the evening of August 5 at 6:00 p.m: Dr. Gornitzka is the director of the Incorporated Counseling Service of the American Luth-eran Church. Pastor Carlson is a 1942 graduate of Augie. According to Mr. Ed Swen-sen, in charge of the alumni banquet, there will be no out-side speaker,. President Ro-bert Nervig will bring a mes-sage. There will be time al-lowed during the banquet for visiting among class members. Rev. Ham Muus to be Oftudent, Activities TI--/ Rev. Ham Muus of Min-neapolis has accepted the posi-tion of Vice-President of Stu-dent Affairs at Augustana Academy. Pastor Muus and his family will move to Canton August 1. Among other duties, Pastor Muus will be responsible for all student activities at the Academy outside of the class-room. He will also head the school's public and church re-lations. Pastor Muus is a graduate of St. Olaf College and Luther Theological Seminary in • St. Paul. He is married and has three children, Nathan, 13, Jef-frey, 10, and Solveig, 8. For the past 13 years he has been the director of the Ply-mouth Youth Center in Min-neapolis which includes the Northside Community Center, Kinsmen and Kinswomen, En-counter, Wilderness Canoe Base and Frontier Farm. He is on the Minnesota gov-ernor's advisory council for youth and council for youth human relations. He is past president and vice-president of the American Camping Associ-ation (Minnesota Section) and Vice President at Academy is president-elect of Region V, which includes most of the Midwest. He is also consultant on the National Field Staff for Bible Camp Association (American Lutheran Church) and consultant with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (on camp-ing) .
