On July 16, 1970, Herbert Krause writes to Les Baylor describing his trip accompanying Professor Pettingill's Advanced Bird Class to Upper Michigan's Sleeper Lake where they identifying a total of 106 species. Krause ends the letter with an overview of the recent pieces of text Krause has read and naming his most recent paper 'The Mad Hatter's Teaparty'.

This is a part of the larger Herbert A. Krause collection available at the Center for Western Studies. Herbert A. Krause was a long-time professor of English and writer-in-residence at Augustana College. He is also the author of three novels, numerous plays, poems, essays, and reviews. Krause was also an enthusiastic bird watcher and historian. Krause was the principal founder of the Center for Western Studies, and his papers have been in possession of the Center since 1976.
