Collection Description
This is part of the larger Nellie Zabel Willhite Collection available at the Center for Western Studies. The collection contains the correspondence, photographs, news clippings, and other material regarding South Dakota's first woman pilot. The papers of Nellie Zabel Willhite are an excellent source of information regarding her days as a pilot, as well as, early flying in general. Nellie was also deaf and attended the South Dakota School for the deaf where she met Dr. L. C. Mead, the superintendent of the State Hospital at Yankton. She spent her summers with the Mead family, and so some of Dr. Mead's papers are also included in this collection.
