Item Description | Thomas L. Riggs writes to Anna Riggs (sister) on October 3, 1885 to ask if she would supervise and teach the women of the Oahe mission on a permanent basis. He begins by discussing H.E.W.’s likely move to Washington to pursue journalism and literature. Before broaching the topic of Anna moving to the Oahe Mission, Thomas writes about the need the mission has for a sewing instructor. Mrs. Collins, the previous teacher, has a young family and is not returning. He comments that while there is a guaranteed room at the mission the rest of the expenses and wages are not yet firmly established. |
Collection Description | The Thomas L. Riggs Papers, available at the Center for Western Studies, document the activities of Thomas Riggs, the Indian workers, and missionaries in his charge. Other material in the collection also cover the work of Alfred L. Riggs at the Santee Normal Training School and the work of the Presbyterian missionary John P. Williamson. This collection is arranged in three series: correspondence; notes, manuscripts, talks, and reports; and an 1938 - 1946 account book. |
