The Esther (Johnstad) Knutson Collection, available at the Center for Western Studies, contains original documents and photographs relating to the life of Millie (Thorson) Johnstad (Esther's mother), who lived in Sisseton, South Dakota. The collection contains correspondence between 1908-1924 and 1969-1974. Of note are the letters between Elias Johnstad and Mille Thorson (Esther's father) from 1918-1919. Elias served in the U.S. military during World War I (WWI), where he was stationed in France. The subjects of the photographs are primarily family occasions, holidays, and trips. Other miscellaneous documents in the collection relate to Millie's life and childhood, including school notebooks and Luther League papers.
