Paul Gruchow to visit Augustana
The Augustana Library Associates presents
Minnesota author Paul Gruchow on
Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at 7:30 p.m. in
Kresge Recital Hall. Gruchow will discuss
his adventures as an author, a naturalist,
and an educator, considering the important
role that literature has played in our
understanding and care of the earth around
US.
A committed naturalist, Paul Gruchow has devoted his literary career
to articulating his observations on country life, the environment, and
changes in our national culture. His first book Journal of a Prairie
Year (1985) chronicled his adventures as he traveled from southern
Minnesota, through the eastern Dakotas to Winnipeg . Gruchow's,
The Necessity of Empty Places, received widespread acclaim for its
sensitive consideration of Man's place in nature.
Gruchow's more recent publications have centered on the
geographical area he knows best--Minnesota. Minnesota on My
Mind (1989), Travels in Canoe Country (1992), and Grass Roots:
The Universe of Home (1995) all feature aspects of his home state.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune has described Gruchow as a naturalhistory
philosopher and a visionary. In 1998 Gruchow won the
Flanagan Prize for Contribution to Letters.
Gruchow will share his belief that we need to explore the
relationsh ip of person to place, illuminating not only our lands, but
our souls.
