HOGENSON DESCRIBES TOUR —Page 2— Friday, December 2, 1960 AUGUSTANA COLLEGE VOL. 42, No. 10 All Nations' Festivities Open Advent Season Augustana Hosts Annual TALC Officers' Meeting Who's Who Selects 20 Augies Ardys Johnson, Ralph Ablin, Jan Henden, Doug Hokenstad, Ardell Stavnes, Judy Ol-sen; (standing) Joane Williams, John Sim-ko, Carole Mortvedt, and Joan Wylie. Not pictured are Jan Rosenbaum and Keith Od-ney. "Merry Christmas" will be extended in various languag-es to all who attend this year's All Nations festival. The event will be held in the gym tomor-row night beginning at 4:30 p.m. General chairman is Kent Rolfing. Assisting him is Ron Halvorson. Others on the gen-eral committee include Judy Blegen, secretary; Glen Wika, business manager; Dave Gel-lerman and Tom Jacobson, construction, and Jim Arsh-em, publicity. Jean Sunde is food super-visor; Jeanne Warkenthien, program editor; Ron Fergu-son, clean-up chairman, and Trudy Rogness, program ar-tist. In charge of coat check is the W.R.A. Fireside Fellow-ship will have charge of the' tree - lighting ceremony front of East Hall. The ticket booth will be under the direc-tion of the social board. In charge of the program which will be presented at 6:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. is Tom Satre. Ula Jensen will be mis-tress of ceremonies. They will do "A Perite Mihi Portos" by Dietrich Buxte-hude. Another group is a Mozart quintet including Mr. and Mrs. T. Herman Keahey, Gary Paulson, Don Horstad, and Mr. Fred Teuber. The Rev. Stanley Tung will play a Chi-nese melody on the flute. English carols will be pre-sented by the Norsemen com-posed of Larry Larson, Roger Thoreson, Lee Ytreeide, and Ron Klimes. The German Round Singers will close the program. Traditional Christmas foods and customs will be displayed at the various booths. The ad-mission charge is 25 cents. Sophomore, junior and senior music majors are reminded that Piano Pro-ficiency exams will be given beginning Decem-ber 1. You may sign up for an examination time at the studios of Miss Melbraaten, Miss Steen, or Mr. Pflueger. Announce Edda Queen Contest Deadline for the Edda queen contest has been announced as December 17. Every organ-ization on campus in encour-aged to select a candidate and submit a photograph of her to the Edda office by this date. This year the judges for the contest will be four local peo-ple. Further information may be obtained from Larry Bor-gum. Meeting o n Augustana's campus this Saturday, Decem-ber 3, will be the sixth annual ELC (TALC) student govern-ment conference. Meetings will be held in the Commons building. Special Convocation Features Astronomy Professor-Lecturer Dr. Hugh M. Johnson of the Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona will visit the Augustana campus on Monday and Tuesday, De-cember 5 and 6. He is being sponsored by the American Astronomical Society, the Na-tional Science Foundation, the Augustana Physics Depart-ment, and the Augustana Artist and Lecture Series Committee. On Monday, Dr. Johnson will speak at a convocation in the Little Theater at 9:45 to 10:15 on "What Is Astron-omy?" Monday afternoon at 3:30 in the Little Theater his topic is "Nucleus of the Galaxy." On Tuesday, at 8:45 in the Little Theater, he will discuss "Interstellar Matter." In each of the three lectures slides will be used. Throughout the two-day vis-it, individual conferences with students and faculty members will be arranged. Dr. Hugh M. Johnson, As-sociate Astronomer at the Steward Observatory and As-sociate Professor of Astrono-my at the University of Ari-zona, earned his docotrate at: the University of Chicago. He has been a Research As-sociate at the University of Chicago, Assistant Professor at the State University of Io-wa, and Visiting Fellow of the Australian National Univer-sity. His research interests are interstellar matter, galactic structure, and extra-galactic systems. The general public is mvit-ed. Registration begins at 12:00 noon, with the registration fee set at $1.00. Following this will be a general meeting, be-ginning at 1:00 p.m. The topic to be discussed at the session beginning at 1:30 p.m. is "Student Govern-ment in Perspective". This will be followed by a coke break. "Service Agreements" will be discussed at the 3:15 ses-sion. This will include mater-ial on Athletics, Mission Pro-grams, and Entertainment. Special groups will meet at 4:30 p.m. These include social board, inter-society, editors of school papers and year books, and foreign students. The members of the confer-ence will attend All Nations in the evening. Special delegates to the con-ference will be the various student body presidents. These include Bob Alexander from Concordia in Moorhead, Minn.; Ron Lee from Luther in Decorah, Iowa; Dave Wee from St. Olaf, Northfield, Minn.; Fred Mai, Wartburg, Waverly, Iowa, and Wayne Reed, Sioux Falls College. Choir Presents Christmas Show A Christmas program will be presented in student body tomorrow morning by mem-bers of the Tracy High School Choir. They are under the di-rection of Wayne Mitchell, a alumnus of Augustana. The 65-voice choir will pre-sent a portion of its Christ-mas concert program includ-ing religious and novelty num-bers. Mitchell and his wife, Miriam, also an Augie gradu-ate, will sing several solos and duets. Mitchell has directed the choir for three years. Also at this time Kent Rol-fing will introduce the mem-bers of the committee for All Nations. Students and faculty are invited to attend. Debaters Rank High at USD Augustana's debate team is attending the second annual Air Academy Invitational at Colorado Springs this week-end. Last week the team was one of five undefeated in the "A" division in debate at the 14th annual Intercollegiate Foren-sic Conference at USD. In team points, Augustana's team of Dave Dahl and John Hed-land rated highest. Dave Dahl was judged first in extempore speaking; Car-ole Moberly received an ex-cellent in Interpretive Read-ing; Geraldine Bacon an ex-cellent in Oratory, and Jim Jestus and Sharon Martin, ex-cellents in Discussion. The team of Karen Hen-ning and Bonnie Svarstad were undefeated in the "B" division. GATHERED INFORMALLY in the Com-mons Lounge are the twenty seniors selected this year for Who's Who in American Uni-versities and Colleges.
