October 15, 1959 THE AUGUSTANA MIRROR Vol. 41, No. A Augie Approaches Viking Days Date Norwegian Ambassador To Visit Augie for Homecoming Weekend Students Pick Candidates For Homecoming Queen In an atmosphere heavy with the color and ceremony of the Viking tradition, seven senior women will present themselves before the homecoming gathering on Friday, October 23, for the climactic moment of coronation. Chosen last week by vote of the upperclassmen were Daleann Anderson, Marilyn Gottschalk, Ida Jessen, Lois Ly-man, Ellen Olson, Barb Routledge and Sharon Sievers. Art major Daleann Anderson of Sioux Falls is no stranger to honors by Augustana students: she has twice been chosen as a member of the Valentine court for the Sweetheart For-mal. An Adelphic, Daleann is a member of the Physical Edu-cation Club, past vice president of WRA, and a cheerleader. She reports a numb, dumbfounded sensation at hearing of her candidacy. Queen candidate Marilyn Gottschalk confesses that the sensation of being chosen for the royal court is an impossible one to describe. "It's something that you don't even dare dream about, you know," she says. Marilyn is an English ma-jor from Watertown who is acting as a women's counselor for the second year. She was a debater during her freshman and sophomore years and was elected last year as secretary of ASA and president of AWS. She is a past president of the Alpha society and a member of Chi Epsilon. Ida Jessen, third member of the royal party, is a sociolo-gy major from Redfield. She gains experience in her major field by working as a student therapist in the mental health center and as an assistant in the sociology department. Ida is an Adelphic and served last year on the student council and as a counselor. She was honored during her junior year as Blue Key Sweetheart. Asked her feelings on being a candi-date for queen, Ida describes the sensation as one of excit-ment and warm pleasure. "I don't think the full impact has hit me even yet," she admits. Girls on third floor Tuve Hall will be proud of their counselor, Lois Lyman of Estherville, Iowa, as she walks down the coronation aisle. Lois is a deaf education major who is a member of the social board and of the Philomathian so-ciety; she was a sweetheart candidate last year. As to being a member of the royalty, Lois says, "It's just wonderful. But I feel so unworthy." Though home with the flu when the news came, Ellen Olson's excitement was undampened. "I couldn't — they couldn't — it couldn't be me!" Ellen, elementary education major from Garretson, sings alto with the A choir and ap-pears from time to time as soloist on campus. Past president of the Adelphics, she is secretary of the physical education club and a member of WRA. Viking Manor counselor Barb Routledge from Sioux City, Iowa, admits that she's been in a daze since hearing of her Viking Days candidacy. With her psychology major, Barb plans to enter either social work or overseas service with the government. Last year she served as president of the Athenian society, and she is presently acting as treasurer of Chi Epsilon. Completing the royal entourage is Sharon Sievers of Scottsbluff, Neb. Editor of the MIRROR, Sharon was class president her sophomore year and last year served as Vik-ing Days chairman. She sang last year with the a capella choir and was a candidate for the student body presidency. She is a member of the Alpha society and Chi Epsilon. She considers this honor "probably the finest thing that's ever happened to me," but is sure that "someone must have mis-counted the ballots."
