According to associate professor of physics Eric Wells, who is shepherding the science building project, renovation of the GSC's north wing and the GSC 100 classroom area will begin in May or early June and will continue through the fall semester, hopefully conclud-ing in December (around the same time as construc-tion on the new wing is scheduled to be completed). Registrar Joni Krueger said that, while lectures will be relocated to other academic buildings, to the Sioux Falls Seminary and to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, "with a few exceptions:' all labs will continue as they normally would. "Biology and chemistry labs will be largely unaffect-ed next fall, since the west wing of the GSC will still be operational;' Wells said. He also noted that, while nurs-ing labs will be relocated to Humanities and physics labs will be "split between" Humanities and the Madsen Center, the biology labs typically held in the north wing of the GSC will "shift to the west wing." Nothing is more terrifying for friends, family or a col-lege community, and it has happened twice this year at Augustana. According to director of Campus Safety Rick Tupper, missing person reports were filed for both an unnamed student and freshman Kayla Gilles early in the mornings of Dec. 7 and Jan. 28. The students were each found safe within a few hours of the reports being filed. After friends could not lo-cate the students, they notified Campus Safety. Tupper said they worked closely with the Sioux Falls Police Department (SFPD) in running initial search options, which included calling the miss-ing students' phones and the phones of friends. In accordance with Augus-tana's missing student policy, once officers had unsuccessfully completed initial search pro-cedures, Campus Safety expanded the search in both in-cidents. In the first incident, officers went door-to-door in Bergsaker Hall, and in the second, SFPD, Campus Safety officers and residence life staff searched all dorms on campus. "I really appreciated how much they did to try to find me," Gilles said. "Campus Safety is a really good resource to have." A rise in government concern for safety on campuses began when the federal government passed a law in 2008 Projected academic calendar moves start date before Labor Day MATTHEW HOUSIAUX mjhousiaux12@ole.augie.edu Don't panic. Augustana students and faculty will not have to come to campus on Labor Day, despite a series of changes made to the school's academic calendar that push the start date up by more than a week. The earlier start date is part of the ad-ministration's larger plan to solve a few major scheduling dilemmas and address a number of student and faculty concerns, such as the length of J-term and the date of graduation. The first scheduling dilemma concerned when to start classes in the fall semester. At Augustana, the first day of class has traditionally fallen after Labor Day, but because it is always the first Monday in September, the exact calendar date of the holiday fluctuates from year to year. According to registrar Joni Krueger, this posed several problems for the school over the next few years, when Labor Day fell as late as is possible in September and threatened to interfere with the Christmas holiday. "Ideally, we like to get our students home well in advance of Christmas so they can be home safely and enjoy their break, Krueger said. "And what we sometimes forget is that our faculty still have to grade all their finals, and I need to get those grades in. So, it's all about trying to figure out enough leeway time so grades can be entered and faculty aren't having to think about grading on Christmas day."
