A Christmas tree in the Chapel helps to maintain the "Christmas spirit" despite the lack of snow outside. THE Augustana Mirror December 13, 1990 SIOUX FALLS, S.D., VOL. 74, NO. 12 Kendle cut from Augie staff Wrestling coach given walking papers by NEAL RONQUIST co-editor Paul Kendle, Augustana's head wrestling coach for 18 years, was one of the faculty members released yesterday. The reductions in faculty and staff were announced Wednesday by Augustana College President Lloyd Svendsbye. The cuts are effective at the end of the 1990-91 school year. In addition to coaching, Kendle is an assistant professor in health, physical education and recreation. "The president informed me this morning of his decision to eliminate the head wrestling coaching position as part of a total cost reduction program at the college," said Bill Gross, Augustana's athletic director. "He instructed me to investigate ways to consolidate the head wrestling coaching position with another full-time position within the department." Svendsbye stated that all the college's activities were reviewed in the process of cutting costs. "I decided on releasing the wrestling coach since wrestling is not a required sport for membership in our conference," he said. "And I believe that task can most easily be consolidated with other coaching or teaching functions of the athletic staff. Moreover, of all the required sports coached by full-time staff, wrestling involves the fewest students." Members of the wrestling team were visibly upset after Coach Kendle told them the news: "As a senior, I can honestly say that I have more respect and learned more about life from Augie wrestling and Coach Kendle than from any part of the curriculum at Augie," said Dale Nothdurft. "Eighteen years of his life those cases we've apparently not learned the lessons very well," he said. "Consequently, our dependence on foreign oil has even increased." Currently, petroleum consumers in the United States pay a 25 cent per gallon tax on gasoline, while consumers in many other industrialized countries pay an average of $1.50 to $3.00 per gallon in taxes. Tieszen said that an increase in the cost of petroleum to the United States consumer could create an economic necessity for them to conserve gasoline. "We're not paying a reasonable share for petroleum resources," he said. "People must not believe that there are only finite petroleum resources in this world. On a per capita basis, we and only a few other countries use Addiction cont. on p. 3 said junior Lance Smith. "Coach Kendle has been a great asset to Augustana College and to the sport of wrestling. He has made Augustana wrestling a nationally respected figure and this is how our president, Lloyd Svendsbye intends to treat him." "Tuition goes up and quality staff members are forced to leave," said senior Jim Ryan. "How can we believe in the values of Augustana if an 18- year veteran is canned. I guess it is a desperation move by (president) Svendsbye." "People may think wrestlers can be pushed around, but Coach Kendle has taught us to never quit and when things get tough to get in someone's face," said assistant wrestling coach Mark Krier. "Well, Augustana, you are going to have myself and one big army in your face." A native of Perry, Okla., Kendle was head wrestling coach at Pawhuska High School in Pawhuska, Okla., for four years. He was assistant wrestling coach at the University of South Dakota for one season before joining Augustana's staff in 1973. Coach Kendle was unavailable for comment. "I feel they lost respect for our program and Paul Kendle," said senior Tim Johnson. "Paul Kendle represents the program, he has brought it to its respected position." "I've been through this situation before and it's never pleasant," said senior Philip Farley. "All I have to ask is where the hell is your loyalty." "I don't see the logic in firing a teacher/coach, who has been around for 18 years, just because this move will effect the least amount of people," LAURIE BUSS staff writer The United States' war against drugs is a fight against an addiction. The United States' potential war in the Middle East, however, would be a fight to maintain an addiction; a fight to maintain an addiction to oil. According to U.S. News and World Report, the United States imports more oil than the combined oil consumption of Germany, France and Britain. Foreign oil dependency in the United States is up 77% since 1983. Dr. Larry Tieszen, Professor of Biology, said this increased dependency is due largely because the United States has not created an effective energy policy.
