Production studio may become reality by Kim VanWinkle staff writer Beginning next. fall, Augustana will have the beginnings of • a television production studio. An allocation of $10,000 has been given to the Communications department to begin purchasing the equipment necessary for such a facility. Augustana already has KDLT TV's old production set which includes the furniture and backdrops, but needs to purchase cameras, editing machines, and lighting equipment. According to Dr. Michael Pfau of the Speech/Drama department, a room in Tuve Hall that was recently vacated by the A. C. Nielsen Company will serve as a temporary location for the facility, but since it isn't big enough for actual broadcasting, Augustana should ultimately look towards constructing room for a whole studio. A group of students in Pfau's persuasion class is studying Augustana students' attitudes towards the possibility of such a studio, and has found that almost everyone is in favor of it, but most are equally worried about the cost. According to the group, students from all majors could benefit from having a production facility on campus. Communication majors can get hands-on experience working with production equipment, theatre majors can use the facility to examine performances, and HPER majors can use it to evaluate his or her skills. Pfau agreed by saying that television communication is one of the most important aspects of mass media. Students need to get hands-on experience to be marketable in their field. Currently, the communications and journalism programs have access to one video camera. Facilities at Lincoln High School are used to produce news casts so that students can gain some experience in broadcasting. In addition to allotting the $10,000 for new equipment, Augustana has demonstrated a serious commitment to this project by hiring Professor Jong Kang this past year. His major research interests include television communication, According to Pfau it is only a matter of time before this facility is implemented into the communications program. ve : Johanson and Amanda Huss don eir sixties .apparel to twist and shout at e rnerican 'Bandstand" sixties dance. ho to bjr Kristen Hasche.
