About ten years ago the ladies decided to pool their traditional recipes. The first year the fest was limited to only one community meal to which close friends were invited. The event was such a success that each year it got bigger and bigger with friends from all over invited. Now the Schmeckfest, which means literally "taste festival", attracts people from Iowa, and Minnesota as well as South Dakota. It is necessary to make reservations in advance because the ladies still cook the entire meal in their home kitchens and then transport the dishes to the hall at Freeman Junior College where it is served. Even here the meal still has the atmosphere of home because the huge bowls of steaming food are passed up and down the long rows by ladies dressed At the spring formal, April 11, Duke Ellington, master of music, will perform and display his famous talent. The formal will be held in the Commons with Sioux Falls College. While playing at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1956 Duke Ellington's public acclamation reached a peak. He has also contributed to the purely instrumental field with compositions such as "Black and Tan Fantasy" and "Afro - Bossa". He also created "The Liberian Suite" (commissioned by the Liberian Government) and "The Far East Suite" (inspired by his tour for the State Department). He has recorded 40 albums and all of these recordings reflect the full diversity of his musical interests. Another reason contributing to his success lies in his unique orchestra. It is unique because the same members have been playing together for such a long time. These members are also legends. Harry Carney, Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, Lawrence Brown, Jimmy Hamilton, Russel Procope, Cat Anderson, Paul Gonsalves, and Sam Woodyard are the stars of the group. For all these reasons Duke Ellington has reached the ultimate in his musical talents and has become a legend in his own time. Last word was heard from the plane about 6 p.m., Sunday, January 11. Search continued for two weeks — but heavy snowfall and blizzard weather conditions made it impossible to spot a plane from air or ground snowmoble search at that time. Civil Air Patrol squads from South Dakota and Nebraska continued a twenty-four hour search with the help of volunteers from neighboring states. Correction: The planned "Jabberweek" will occur the weekend after Easter recess. At this time, the activities referred to in last week's Mirror will take place.
